Homemade Taco Seasoning for Taco Tuesday

About a year ago, I had tacos on the menu, but when I went to start cooking dinner, I realized I didn’t have any packages of taco seasoning! What was I supposed to do? I was really too lazy to run to the store to get some, and the thought of changing my meal plan wasn’t appealing to me. So, I decided to make my own taco seasoning.

Throughout the year, my recipe has evolved, and I finally got to a point where I’m satisfied with my recipe and have been using it for a while now. Honestly, I really loved the taco seasoning in a pouch, but this tastes so much better. Also, you can control your spice levels, which I love. I’m not a huge fan of cumin, so I don’t put as much in as others might. My husband and I also love spice, so we use a little bit more cayenne.

Below is my recipe that I’ve worked on for a while now. This gives my taco meat (usually ground beef) so much incredible flavor, that I never want to go back to using the packets! Next time you’re making a batch of tacos, try this out instead of the packet! Chances are you have most of the ingredients already in your spice rack, so give this a go!

DIY Taco Seasoning

  • 2 T Chili Powder
  • 1/2 t cumin
  • 1 t garlic powder
  • 1 t onion powder
  • 1/2 t cayenne
  • 1 t paprika
  • 2 t kosher salt
  • 1/2 t black pepper

After I make my seasoning, I make my taco meat by sautéing some diced onion and garlic in olive oil. Then I brown the ground beef and skim off the grease. I add my seasoning to the beef and let that cook for about a minute, then add in 1/3 of a cup water. I let that simmer until my desired thickness.

Happy Taco Tuesday!
