Road Trip Must Haves

Hubby and I are going on a road trip to Oklahoma City soon, and we are pumped! This will be our first real road trip together. We’ve gone to the lake together before, but this feels different. We’ll be taking Chloe as well, so we need to make sure we have everything we need!

I’m a huge snack person, and I want to get some snacky foods to have in the car so we don’t need to buy something at a gas station. My husband loves these things called Combos, which are like pretzels stuffed with cheese? I dunno, I don’t like them. We’ll also have Skittles, Cheez Its and Slim Jims.

We could listen to music the whole way, but Hubby and I are so into podcasts right now. We don’t listen to too many of the same shows, so we have to always agree on something for our drives. I recently found Deadly Manners, which is like an old-school radio drama, narrated by LeVar Burton. I think this is going to be something both of us will enjoy. And it’s pre-downloaded on my phone, so no data will need to be used!

Crafts + Books

I’ll be driving the first shift since my husband will still be working, but when I’m done, I’m breaking into a book or a craft. I love how easy it is to crochet in the car. I have cross stitched in the car before, but I think it’s difficult to balance my pattern, all my floss, my needle and my work. With crochet, all I need is my hook and yarn! Whenever Hubby needs a music break, I’ll read. I did just get my new issue of Real Simple in the mail, so that will be coming along as well.

Water Bottle

A few years ago I started bringing a water bottle when I travel, and honestly I’ll never go back. I love being able to fill it up at gas stations or airports, and when I’m on my trip, I never need to buy a bottle of water. While traveling, it’s easy to get dehydrated, so this is a must for me. Also, we’ll have Chloe so we need water for her which we pour in her portable water bowl. Here’s a pic of Chloe looking like the majestic animal she is in the car.

When the scenery gets really boring, which is something we are used to living in the Midwest, Hubby and I like to play a game. We’ll either play the Alphabet Game with the road signs, or 20 Questions. Sometimes we’ll come up with crazy Would You Rather questions, and that’s entertaining, too.

Wish us luck on our trip! If you have any recommendations for Oklahoma City, drop them below!

2019 Books So Far

Every year I create a Goodreads Challenge for how many books I want to read in the year. This year I chose 40. Well, thanks to a job where I have headphones in all day long, I listened to a bunch of audiobooks and finished my challenge a while ago. So I upped it to 60. I’m at 54 as of today, so I feel pretty good about finishing this year, which is always a great feeling.

Here are some of the hits and misses that I’ve read this year. And some of the books I’m hoping to get to before January!

One Day in December by Josie Silver

Rating: 4.5 / 5

This book was such a delight to read! I’m a sucker for a good romance novel, and this one didn’t disappoint. I picked it up because I saw it all over my Instagram at the end of last year, so I finally picked it up at Target. It’s not your typical over-the-top mushy romance, so if romance is not your thing, maybe give this one a try!

Into the Water by Paula Hawkins

Rating: 2 / 5

I’ve been chasing the same high I had when I read Gone Girl years ago, and I’m always disappointed. This one was no different. The storyline was boring, I didn’t care about any of the characters, and I just wanted it to end so badly. I also read The Girl on the Train by this author, and that was also disappointing.  Maybe now I’ve learned my lesson.

Calypso by David Sedaris

Rating: 5 / 5

I absolutely love David Sedaris, and his new book had me in stitches. I listened to the audiobook, which he reads, and it is absolutely fantastic. His stories are witty and sharp and unlike anything else I’ve ever read before. This is a great one to download before a road trip and listen to in the car!

The Martian by Andy Weir

Rating: 4 / 5

My husband had been trying to get me to read this for a while, and I just kept resisting. I finally read it this summer and I’m so glad I did! I’m not a big sci-fi fan, but this book had me so intrigued! I have yet to see the movie, but it’s on my list now. The book was surprisingly funny, which I didn’t expect.

The Obsession by Nora Roberts

Rating: 5 / 5

After my mom read this book, she wouldn’t stop talking about how good it is, so she gave it to me. Now, I love a good Nora Roberts book. They are usually breezy and an easy to enjoy book. But this one is so good! It’s dark and twisty and sinister. It’s amazing. If you’re a true crime fan, I suggest picking this one up!

Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

Rating: 5 / 5

I mentioned how much I loved this book in my Friday Favorites last week, and I had to include it here as well. This is a book written by my two favorite podcasters, and the stories that they share are so heartwarming and honest. I loved how they tied it back to the podcast (My Favorite Murder) and brought it all together. It’s a great read!

Friday Favorites

Hello! It’s been a bit, hasn’t it? Life got kind of crazy for a while. I started a new job, but continued to look for new jobs, and life has left me quite drained and exhausted. I always enjoyed blogging, and The Midwestern Mrs. is something I dreamed of doing for a long time, so now I’m back at it. 👋🏻 Here are some things that I’m loving this Friday (other than the fact that it’s Friday – hell yeah!)

Tattoo of Chloe

Last week I finally finished my tattoo of my beautiful baby girl, Chloe. It was done by the very talented Megan Mac. For those who have read the blog before, you know how obsessed I am with my pup, and it just made sense to get her tattooed on my body. It’s healing nicely, although I’m in the itchy stage.

I got some Tarot cards from The Creeping Moon on Etsy and I’m in love with them. The artwork is absolutely beautiful, and I love all the nature themes. I’ve been pulling a card every morning to start the day and it’s so enjoyable to focus on that before starting a hectic day.

So, I love everything to do with The Bachelor – even though this season of Bachelor in Paradise was kind of boring – but to fill my fix during the off season, I’ve been watching Love Island on Hulu. Guys, it’s so incredibly trashy and delightful and wonderful. All the contestants are British, so I have to have the captions on so I can understand what they’re saying, and even then I’m still sometimes confused. Mugging? Grafting? Pied Off? Who knows, but it’s great and if you want something mindless and trashy (in a good way!) to watch, I recommend this.

You know how much I love a good podcast, so your girl is here with another recc. If you like True Crime, or if you just love Keith Morrison like me, check out The Thing About Pam. It’s so addicting! I binged all the available episodes in one day and I’m already waiting for the next episode to come out.

Speaking of true crime podcasts, I finally read Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: A Definitive How-To Guide by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark and it was so good! I devoured the entire book in like two days, which is pretty quick for how crazy my life has been right now.

I’m happy to be back with y’all here. I’ve truly enjoyed blogging, and I hope that you’ve enjoyed reading the bullshit that I have to say. Thanks for reading, friend!
